I'm ashamed to say that this is the first "Chucky" movie of the 5-movie franchise I've ever seen. Let's get this straight, I'm a movie junkie ... some might even say a movie slut, especially for horror films. I think most horror movies are pretty funny, a lot of laughing "at" them (as opposed to "with" them). Movies like Freddy vs. Jason are particularly funny, whether they intended to be or not.
Don Mancini wrote all five Chucky films, but this is the first time he's directed one. He does a good job; too bad I haven't seen the previous ones to compare to!
Do you remember Grima Wormtongue in Lord of the Rings? How about Peregrin Took? Believe it or not, both show up in this film as "Chucky" and "Glen/Glenda," the child or "seed" in this film. They do excellent voice acting.
The plot is vaguely ridiculous and not really important, it seems. There are "family" scenes where the misgendered child is depicted as an innocent with a deeply rooted insanity s/he is trying to battle which don't seem to work too well. But overall this film is a laugh-a-minute type, funnier than many deliberate comedies. Maybe they should call this genre "comedy gore," even though it sounds like the child of a former presidential candidate! Then again, maybe that's kind of appropriate.
