The Wookiee Hut News and Weather: 2009 Archive

This page is reserved for WookieeHut's Latest News & Weather for the calendar year 2009.

December 14, 2009
Lately, the Wookiee Hut has been given many multi-part stories, which we have been posting a chapter or two at a time. But this time, author Bethany Handcuff gave us a juicy Jedi tale that begged to be posted, complete! So, here it is, Rated R all the way up (or down in the gutter, heh) to X, with FF slash. An early holiday gift, to get us all in the type of mood that the Hut is notorious for, eh? There are 10 parts, so we thought we'd feature just Bethany's work, the better to appreciate it and to feel gratitude for the dirty and the sublime — especially when they occur in the same story!

How time flies when things are either fun ... or difficult. The collapsing, mercurial economy even hits the 'hut in its ways. We also had some email problems, and apologize to those of you who wrote but didn't get a response. Please re-send your emails — the issues we've had with spammers should have subsided by now. Yes, it's true that we've talked about closing the 'hut, since the contributors and people who maintain the site are all rushing around to keep breathing as the economic turbulences wash over us. So, our apologies for our many delays. The creativity still flows: read and enjoy! We'll do all we can to keep the site up. You can help with submissions, comments, and your enjoyment of the site. That's easy, right?

Summer is nearly done in the northern hemisphere, and barring a return to a so-called "Indian Summer" where the heat returns for a final reminder, we are looking forward to the cooling weather. The last few weeks have been brutally hot — over 100°F, so humid that rain sometimes doesn't hit the ground, boiling to steam before it hits the ground. For times like this, where the approach of colder weather provides contrast and relief, we can reflect on the cusp of other sorts — in food, in situations, in passions. Yummy!

Whether at the table or with our favorite heros, contrast is a way to learn to enjoy what you have — just as a cooler snap is a relief, and an Indian summer make you grateful for what was oppressive heat prior. Live, love, eat, as a celebrity chef tried to make us say!

July 12, 2009
Even though it's been great weather and we've had great weather for our summers here, and we've been grilling and hunting and fishing ... it turns out that we have stories to tell rather than writing out recipes or reviewing eateries. Not that that's a problem, eh? Though we did realize that we'd forgotten to show you a bunch of really great "New Jedi Order" Japanese novel covers. You'll remember they seem to be more literal than us in the western hemisphere, something many of us love. And they do inspire stories!

Rated PG

Happy spring! And when spring has sprung, things sprout. Sometimes good things. And sometimes not. Like those sprouts on your onions? That's not as bad as it seems, for onion tops (also called spring onions!) are milder and sweeter in flavor. Don't think of it as a ruined onion — instead, think of it as garnish! Or a kick of flavor that makes any dish taste better! Or maybe not ... Maybe it's nasty and makes you wish it wasn't so spicy, or so indigestion-inciting. Or less ... colorful?

Whatever your feelings on the life-cycle of an onion, be sure to pay respect to the veterans of war. In any galaxy, they get the job done and inspire the rest of us! Be nice and make dinner for them as an alternative to the Memorial Day barbeque — try the wondrous chicken recipe in this posting.

High on the list of things we hate, but which happen and we know they will, but we don't much about it till it's too late: computer crashes. Not just, "oh, it didn't boot up ..." — more like, "time to rebuild everything, you sure you backed up?" Shadow Chaser pointed out that this is like a valued employee giving you two-week notice of termination, but we were so in denial and ignored the signs ... thus, another (real and valid!) excuse for our tardiness. That, and life. Be sure you back up important stuff, and keep your antivirus programs current ... and take 'em out of the shrinkwrap and use 'em.

Other things we hate — having to lie about pleasure. If not lie, be in denial of pleasure. Why do this? The heart and mind and the Force have their reasons, and we believe this "need" to deny the truth is at the core of being human. Don't believe us? Check out the tales in these 'Hut ... or read reviews of novels of the GFFA, if for no other reason than to be inspired to create and read more tales in the 'Hut!

Sometimes nothing goes right, and sometimes it does. At the 'Hut, we assume knowing the bad will help us recognize the good. Or we get to write and read about it all. It makes the bad seem not to horrible, most of the time?

February 23, 2009
Somehow, the colder months seem to ignite passions. It's not just coincidence that Valentine's day for lovers is in the cold, dark month — maybe it's perfect counterpoint for firey passions. Even the lack of light helps to conceal loves forbidden yet hotly desired? And don't we love it? Consider the 'Hut to be that most forbidden of delicacy: voyeurism. It's an old tradition, even epitomized by legitimate artforms like the opera ... and our favorite illegitimate artform: the fanfic! And if love between two is just too much, then the love of self is something that you need to make you whole ...

February 2, 2009
It's cold outside, no matter where you are ... or at least, that's how it feels! We've all felt cold inside, to be sure, whether by discovery, betrayal, hate, disappointment, isolation, and even love ... the chills are something to experience, whether inside or out. And remember that it's not always a bad thing to be cold — tall drinks should remain chilled, too, eh? (And sometimes, the colder they are, the less disappointing they can be, or maybe at least they'll taste less bad.)

Happy New Year, regardless of where you are. Some of us have not even sent out our holiday cards yet, tsk, tsk ... but at least we have a classic 'Hut offering: a selection of excellent tales, a great recipe with story, and a review of a burgery that isn't much good at what it purports to be. A good, classic way to start off a new year, and may it be better than 2008 for all of us! (Given the current economic climate, we may want the Banking Clan to bail us out, but don't give in ... the dark side, that is!)
