Tri-Wizard Cheese Crisps

The house elves of Hogwart's were commissioned to create a special snack for the occasion of the Tri-Wizard Tournament. A sub-set of the Beauxbaton's and Durmstrang schools would spend the academic year at Hogwart's, and one contestant from each of the three schools would qualify to enter the very dangerous competition.

The elves decided that something snackable would be good, and it should be something with crunch. They'd observed that during study times or stressful periods, the students (and professors) would imbibe in great quantities of crunchy snacks, whether sweet, savory, or fresh vegetables. Many would even forego meals and subsist solely on these crunchable snacks.

So the elves created a caloric cheese snack which they felt could substitute for a full meal, but to make it less greasy, they decided not to fry it, but to bake it. And they'd form it into triangles, not only because that shape was easy to pick up and nibble on, but to represent each of the three champions chosen for the tournament.

(When Harry Potter was chosen as the fourth candidate, the House Elves briefly considered a more quadrilateral shape, but Professor Dumbledore stopped them, explaining that the sides represented each of the three SCHOOLS, thus emphasising the concept of communities coming together, not individuals. That's why he's headmaster!)

  • puff pastry sheets (use the frozen kind from the store)
  • grated Parmesan-type cheese (Locatelli, Asiago, Parmagiano, etc.)
Heat the oven to 425°F / 200°C. Thaw the pastry sheets out thoroughly — this normally means leaving the wrapped packet on the counter for 15 minutes or so. Flour a work surface well and carefully open on sheet onto the surface. Flour a rolling pin, then roll out the pastry sheets to about 1/8-inch / 5 mm in depth, then cut the puff pastry into triangular shapes. Be sure you use a sharp knife and cut straight down, or the snacks won't puff up. Place the triangle shapes onto a baking sheet which has been lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle over with the grated cheese. Repeat with any other puff pastry sheets.

Place in the oven till browned and crisp, about 10 minutes or so. Watch them carefully! Remove them from the hot pan when done and allow to cool on a wire rack. Serve at room temperature or warm.
