Wookiee Hut Cuisine presents:
Peaches Ice Cream for "Company"
by Susu, Rosie, Iella, DancingQueen, MaceVindaloo

What is a luxury? In general, it's something that can't be gotten easily wherever you are. So on Kamino, anything that would require dryness or things like grazing land would be rare. On Coruscant, it might be fish, or anything, really. On Hoth, tropical fruits are only a dream. On Tatooine, it's anything wet and cold.

Fortunately for the Solo family residing on Tatooine (as written in Iella's AU tale, At the Oasis), being who they are, they got frequent "drop-ins" and drop-shipments of things like cream or peaches, granny Leia's favorite fruit, and Anakin Solo had created many machines to do things like create ice in the desert climate; he also created a nearly perpetual motion machine to power the many conveniences in their cliffside home, like the elevator or air cooling systems. So luxuries like fruit and cream were a more than occasional treat, but Tahiri insisted such luxuries be reserved for company to keep them "special" and to not devalue the treats.

Padmé Solo was a precocious tyke and being the first grandchild of Leia and Han, she was used to being spoiled; neither Jaina nor Jacen had settled down to produce children in Iella's story. She was also clever and creative, and when her mother said peaches and cream were reserved for when they had company, Padmé decided to have company!

Her uncle Jacen was a well-known zoologist and animal wrangler who had his own holovision show, in which he'd travel to many worlds and present exotic animals to mainstream audiences. Often, he'd present Paddy — as Padmé was called, to differentiate her from her great-grandmother — with small pets, much to Anakin's and Tahiri's chagrin. But she did look after them well and played with them often.

Paddy carefully dressed her Geonosian rock lizards, a nuna with a limp (which Jacen had saved after it'd been hit by a taxi near the spaceport), and some scurrying rodents in scraps of dress fabric fashioned into some semblence of haute couture. She duct-taped them to the edges of her little play table or to chairs, depending on their anatomy, and served up cups of tea and bowls of peach jam poured over with cream.

Paddy had consumed so much sugar and cream that she fell asleep where she was, and that was where her mother found her napping. She scolded Anakin for encouraging her to alter reality. "Me? I was nowhere near her today!" Anakin protested.

Tahiri sniffed, as she scraped the peach jam and cream mess from their bowls into another bowl. "I suppose you're going to tell me that this sort of thing is from my side of the family?" She stirred the concoction.

"Hey, that's not fair, we don't know anything about ... what are you doing?" Anakin recognized the ice-maker's distinctive noise as his wife cranked it up.

"When you're finished pulling the tape off the animals, I'd like it please. I'm making ice cream, I need to seal the container. By the way, be sure Jacen takes a look at the animals when he gets here, make sure that Paddy taping them to the furniture to keep them still didn't harm them, okay?" Anakin admired how Tahiri could calmly make anything out of any situation!

And when Padmé woke up out of her nap, she was delighted to see her uncle Jacen, for he was company! And she hadn't sated herself completely with her impromptu tea party, so she was delighted to eat her bowl of peach ice cream, too. Funny how some people always get exactly what they wanted, after all?

    Peaches Jam
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 8 oz / 225 g frozen peaches
  • pinch salt
Put frozen peaches into a food processor in small batches and pulse to chop into smaller pieces, but do not liquify. Add the lemon juice and sugar while processing. Place in a heavy-bottomed saucepan and heat over medium heat till the sugar is dissolved and the peaches are cooked. You can bottle this in a sterile jar and refrigerate till needed.

    Peaches Ice Cream
  • 1 cup heavy or whipping cream
  • 1 cup Peaches Jam, cold OR 2 to 4 tablespoons of some other jam — the amount varies with the sweetness of the preserves
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
Whip heavy cream until soft peaks form. Add othe Peaches Jam and the almond extract to the cream, mixing it by folding it carefully, being careful not to let the cream fall.

Pour the mixture into the pre-chilled freezing cylinder of a small ice cream maker (i.e. Donvier). Insert paddle, cover and crank until mixture becomes firm. Crank in both directions to clear the paddles. When the mixture has reached desired firmness, transfer to a clean plastic container with a lid and place in the freezer to harden.

Makes almost 1 quart of ice cream, depending how hard you churn.
