Guilty! Gazpacho

Lara Notsil had had it! Every time she chopped up hot peppers, they would disappear unless she used them immediately. So much for trying to prep ingredients in advance for her turn at KP. She was hoping to make an uncooked soup by chopping up everything she needed, so that she could just dump things into a blender and chill the soup on her cooking nights. But time and time again, she found herself having to chop the hot peppers yet again.

Why was she so annoyed? Hot pepper oils would stay on your fingers for days, meaning if you touched your eyes, you'd feel like the fires of hell were consuming your ocular orbs! So she'd wear rubber gloves when touching her peppers. Which gave her an idea ...

One day she used hotter-than-usual peppers and listened carefully ... and sure enough, she heard the squadron medic, Dr. Phanan, complaining that someone came to him with an awful chemical burn on his eyes and horns ... horns! She accused Devaronian Elassar Targon of stealing her chopped peppers, and he had to confess, or go hungry. He admitted that he used the chopped vegetable as a stimulate to exfoliate his horns ... but the peppers she used this time were too much for him and he actually blistered!

Lara forgave him and let him have some of her tasty soup ... but Elassar never took her peppers again, at least not without asking first!

  • One 16 oz can stewed tomatoes
  • One 8 oz can tomato sauce
  • Two red bell peppers, seeded and roughly chopped
  • Half a jalapeno pepper or one small Anaheim pepper, seeded and chopped
  • Two cloves garlic
  • Half a cucumber, peeled, seeded, and roughly chopped
  • One Tablespoon lemon juice
  • Two slices of white bread, crust removed and cubed
Put the tomatoes, tomato sauce, bell peppers, and garlic into a food processor or blender and blend till smooth. Add chopped cucumber, lemon juice, and bread cubes and blend again. Bread cubes will add some body to the mixture.

Place the mixture in the refrigerator for 2 hours to chill. Serve in 8 ounce cup and garnish with finely chopped red onion or cucumber.

Makes 6 - 8 servings.
