Wookiee Hut Cuisine presents:
Medicinal Ginger Limeade
by Rosie and Susu

The Rogues, not having experience as commandos, did not always pack their rations with too much thought. The result is that many of the pilots, human and alien, suffered from "plugged bowels." The drugs they had to solve the problem were sometimes worse than the condition, and many of them suffered from the "runs" on treatment. Remembering that he had suffered similarly shortly after his parents had died -- when he could not be bothered to eat properly, and was under the care of the well-meaning but unskilled Booster Terrik -- Wedge Antilles tried to remember the cure. He finally sent a holo to Booster, who replied with this recipe for a refreshing drink. Wedge made up a batch, had everyone sip as much as they wanted, and the desired laxative effect took place. From thenceforth, this syrup and citrus juice -- to be stirred together into a refreshing drink -- was always included in the Rogue's packs!

Ginger Syrup
  • 4 cups (about 13 oz) fresh gingerroot, peeled and sliced crosswise into 1/8 inch slices
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 3 cups water
Place the ginger, sugar, and water into a large heavy saucepan and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for about 50 minutes till it registers 216° on an instant read thermometer. This will yield a thin syrup suitable for putting in drinks. Remove the pan from the heat and carefully strain the syrup into a non-reactive container. Store it in the refrigerator.

Note: Cook to 220° to 225° for a thicker syrup suitable for pancakes.

Yield: 1 quart ginger syrup.

  • Juice of 5-6 limes
  • -1/3 cup ginger syrup
  • 4 x 12 oz cans club soda
Place lime juice, ginger syrup, and club soda into a two quart pitcher and stir. Adjust to taste. Serve over ice. This is a very fragrant, refreshing summer drink with just a little bit of a bite.

Makes 2 quarts.
