Draco Malfoy was the man of the family ever since his father Lucius was sentenced to Azkaban, and he took the position seriously. He worshipped his father and adored his mother, though he put on a brave front to the world so that he appeared independent, insufferable, and full of confidence. The truth nearly shattered his self-esteen that he loved his parents very much.
So he went directly to Lord Voldemort to become a Death Eater, as his father had. And he volunteered for the most dangerous of tasks the murder of Albus Dumbledor. Voldemort told him that he was too young and unskilled, but Draco begged for the chance to prove himself; he was, in fact, hoping to redeem his father.
Seeing the devotion to Lucius, Voldemort considered that an attack from Malfoy would, at least, be unexpected. But he needed to test his newest recruit, and so he set tasks for him. The first one: make the Dark Lord a batch of chocolate chip cookies!
Why cookies? The Dark Lord had been non-corporeal for all of Draco's lifetime. And what did he want now that he had a body again? The cookies the house elves of Hogwart's made for study snacks! What's more, the rather amorphous look of the cookies inspired the design of Voldemort's dark mark ... if you squint just so, can you see it??
(Supposedly makes about 5 dozen cookies. In his zeal to impress the dark lord, Draco barely got 3½ dozen. Depends on your "drop" size.)
