Crumby Cherry Pie

Hermione Granger was often asked by her classmates — as well as teachers and parents of Hogwart's friends — about many muggle habits and things. In particular, no one in the wizard world could quite understand how muggles could stand to cook they way they do. She had moblized much of the school to make cookies in the muggle manner for a high tea for charity, and had even demonstrated how to bake bread using a recipe donated to the school cookbook by Harry Potter's mother, Lily.

When asked to bake a pie however, Hermione blushed and had to confess that she wasn't any good at doing that "from scratch" and had to resort to "muggle magic." When asked what she meant (for muggles had no magic, as far as wizard people knew), she admitted, "I buy a pie shell frozen at the shop. I don't even thaw it when I put the cherry pie filling — the best are actually from a tin — into the shell. And I don't do a lattice, I make a crumble topping, then pop it into the oven till it's all bubbly. There's really no shame in doing it like this, as the result is delicious!"

Ron Weasley, ever ready to tease his friend, commented, "So that'd make it a crummy muggle-magic pie, eh?" But he ate his words when he smelled and saw the results of Hermione's handiwork. He couldn't let his desire to heckle his classmate overcome the larger hunger for a slice of pie — which really did turn out very good!

  • frozen pie crust, about 9-in / 23-cm wide, shallow (not deep dish)
  • 20 oz / 575 g canned or bottled or preserved cherry pie filling (syrup should be thickened)
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons solid fat (vegetable shortening, margarine, butter)
Heat oven to 425°F / 220°C. Prepare an oven tray by lining it with foil or parchment paper.

In a bowl, mash and stir together the flour, brown sugar, and fat till the mixture is evenly crumbly. Put aside.

Set the frozen pie shell on the oven tray and fill with the cherry pie filling (goop and all!). Scatter the crumbly sugar mixture over the top. Put the whole thing into the oven for about 30 or 40 minutes, till the top is browned and the pie filling is bubbly.

Remove from the oven tray and set on a wire rack to cool. Serve at room temperature. Makes 8 slices of pie.
