Refugee Ship's Biscuits & Gravy

Jedi Padawan Anakin Skywalker worked hard and long at studying to be a Jedi Knight. Even so, he always had time, whether awake or asleep, to think of the woman who helped to take him away from his life of slavery on Tatooine. At the tender age of 9, he had fallen in love with the handmaiden Padmé Naberrie, and was shocked to discover later that she was Queen Amidala of the Naboo, in a security disguise.

It would be ten years before he gazed again upon the beautiful Padmé, now Senator Amidala, representative of 26 systems. To his surprise, his first solo mission was to protect her while she was in hiding from assassins. Initially, it was a dream assignment, but he soon found it harder and harder to be with her and not declare his feelings for her.

Ordered to take refugee transport on a bulk cruiser, he slept by her on the floor of steerage, tentatively wrapping his arm around her in what he hoped she would take as a protective gesture. He couldn't sleep, of course. But for the first time in a month, he did not have nightmares of his mother, and he contented himself with gazing upon his charge. Anakin found he could intimately describe her ear, the curve of her arm, the smoothness of her hip under her concealing clothing.

In this state of arousal, knowing his duty and his vow to the Jedi Order, he was a bundle of nerves, burning energy at an alarming rate. He was even more hungry than usual.

Fortunately, the refugee ship had a 'droid chef with an unusual sense of human taste, and though the fare was stodgy and unimaginative, Anakin consumed it happily. Padmé, her palate attuned to less heavy dishes, had trouble digesting the food, and would give her share to Anakin. She watched in amazement as he ate every morsel; even though she was hungry, she found she enjoyed watching the young Padawan eat, and she happily pushed her portions to him.

Eventually, R2D2 and Anakin made Chopped Salad for Padmé on a regular basis for her while they were on the slow ship. The always-hungry Anakin continued to eat her share of the ship's greasy but tasty biscuits and gravy.

Years later, when Anakin ceased to exist and he was awarded the Sith title Darth Vader, one of his greatest regrets was not being able to eat dishes he remembered well. Like his mother's mushroom stew. Or the simple fare on a refugee ship he shared with the woman who became -- for a brief and wonderful time -- his wife.


Sausage Gravy
  • 2 sweet italian sausages, removed from the skins
  • 1 small to medium sized onion, diced
  • 1 - 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ - 1 cup milk
  • salt
  • pepper
In a saucepan, sauté the sausage meat, with stirring to break up the lumps. In the oil that is rendered, cook the onion and garlic till translucent. Add the can of soup, undiluted. Thin with milk till the desired texture is reached -- the ship's was quite thick, enough to stand up a spoon in it, but make it more milky if you like. Taste and add salt and pepper to your liking. It's good somewhat peppery, so be generous with the peppermill.

Biscuits
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 stick butter OR 1 cup of lard, cold
  • ¾ - 1 cup milk, cold
In a bowl, stir together the flour, salt and baking powder till evently mixed. Cut up the shortening and using a pastry blender or two knives, blend into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, with the pieces about the size of peas. Stir in the cold milk, a bit at a time, until the dough forms a loose ball. With hand, pat the dough together and place covered in the refrigerator for half an hour.

Heat the oven to 400°F. Flour a surface and roll out the dough to about an inch thick. With a round cutter or a small drinking glass, cut out round biscuits and place on an ungreased baking sheet, almost touching each other. Carefully roll up scraps and cut again. Don't do this too often, as the more the dough is handled, the tougher the biscuits will be.

Place the biscuits in the hot oven for about 15 - 20 minutes, or until the tops start to brown. Remove and serve hot, with gravy.

Makes about 12 - 15 biscuits.

Depending on whether you take Anakin-sized or Padmé-sized portions, this is a main dish, or a side dish!
