Cakes often seem more complex to assemble than they really are, especially when you think you've followed the recipe and it doesn't come out the way you thought it should. When a recipe tells you to sift the dry ingredients before adding to the buttery/wet ingredients, they aren't doing it to piss you off. The procedures and "steps" have to be done in the right order. They're doing it because there is a reason for it. So follow the instructions; if you can't read 'em, then have someone show you, or get Diana to draw you a poster to stick up on your 'fridge!
